Only students who have excellent qualifications from their first and/or Masters degree are likely to be successful in the competition. Successful ORSAS applicants usually receive James Watt Scholarships for the remainder of their fees plus a maintenance contribution; see (a) below.

Postgraduate Research Only (Overseas Applicants Only)
Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme
These awards are available to any overseas postgraduate student about to commence a research degree in the UK. Applicants must have a good Honours Degree (or equivalent) as the number of awards is limited. The award covers the difference between the "home" and "overseas" rate of tuition fees. Applicants must apply to only one institution, and it is unlikely they will be able to transfer the award later on.
Application forms are available in December from the School where you will study. To be nominated you must already have been offered a place to study in that School. The closing date for nominations to go forward for selection in the University is 15th February. Only students who have excellent qualifications from their first and/or Masters degree are likely to be selected. Successful ORSAS applicants usually receive James Watt Scholarships for the remainder of their fees plus a maintenance contribution (see below).
